Friday evening SC19 was invited to check out the inaugural Sugar and Bruno fashion show. Always a supporter of the local fashion industry, Jeremiah Williams, Executive Editor, was happy to attend. Having attended many fashion shows around the city, he has seen the good and bad. This was his first dancewear show, so not really sure what type of formatting he was in for.
Generally speaking it was organized like most shows around the city should be done. Sugar and Bruno hosts a dance camp in Indianapolis every year, so there were a bunch of dance kids and parents. They had a VIP room set up for press and special guests. Now we are not talking about bagged chips on a table. Williams had the opportunity to chat with Sugar and Bruno staff about collection and key information. Was able to run into fellow editors from around the city. There was even an opportunity to talk to Chelsea Hightower, Kent Boyd, and Double Up dancers. Everything from start to finish was branded will. They even went as far to make custom cocktails for adults and mocktails for the kids.
Taking my seat front row with some of the "All Star Faculty", we took a couple selfies and was ready for the show. The Show was full of lightweight graphics and color blocked tops. The favorite guy pieces were the Ninja Pant (which Williams' has and wears more than he will admit) and the Kent Boyd tanks.
You could tell the models were dancers, which made for horrible walks down runway. It was more of dancers strut, but when in a room full of dancers can't really complain.
The pieces were pretty commercial, and I say that in a good way. The pieces go beyond just dancewear and could be worn as lifestyle pieces outside of dance studios.
For example there were tees for guys and girls that rocked some good graphic work. Who doesn't dig a graphic tee as a layering piece under a button front shirt or cardigan.Speaking of cardigans, the Fall collection will consist of unisex open front knit cardigans. I know it sounds weird when the word unisex is thrown out, but look at American Apparel. Williams is more favored towards a good jersey cardigan, he is excited to check out the Sugar and Bruno knit piece. It is one of the more fashionable pieces with fitted arms and a drop back.
Way to go Sugar and Bruno on a well produced inaugural show.
